Clement Massier 1844-1917  Ceramic lion

A wonderful and rare turquoise glazed sculpture of a roaring lion. Massier studio Golfe Juan appr. 1885/1895. Measurements 6" x 2" (15.5 x 6,5 cm.)Incised stamp on the bottom and monogram frontside left M.A. (Marius Alexandre??)In very good conditon. Some age crackling. A small chip to the left ear. This is a rare find nowadays. Clement Massier comes from a long line of ceramists starting in the early 18th. century. In 1883 he opened a new factory(studio) in a small town Golfe Juan conveniently located at the Cote d'Azur. Near his new factory he erected an exhibition hall and a gallery. The latter in neo classical style with turquoise detailing inspired from the persian and Moorish faience. Massier's production would be sold in at least five Paris galleries. He became famous for his iridescent vases.
