| Unique Japanese folding screen or roomdivider from the Meiji period. Beautifully painted in goldlacquer and a touch of different colors like the blue which is very rarely done on lacquered objects. It's painted on both sides which was only done at better quality items and/or on request of the buyer. This screen must have been ordered at the time by a very wealthy person from the West. It's typically done for the western market. Eagle, cranes, pigeons, flowers, bamboo, etc. Every bird has inlaid glass eyes. To much going on to be specific. The top and botton freezes (cormorants?) are carved out of one piece of wood. The sides are strenghtened with iron ribs in original silk bindings. Each panel measures 161.5 x 56.5 cm. which makes it overall 161.5 x 226 cm. This screen is in it's original conditon and has the wear you'd expect from a piece this age. There're no breaks or glued parts. Along the sides some paintloss due to climat changes and replacing the screen. The painted panels are in remarkable good condition. Overall condition is nice but could do with some tlc for preservation. Restoring lacquer items into their original state is very costly and a time consuming process. Personaly I think this screen breaths out history and should remain as it is. There are additional pictures available on request. It's a large object which requires a great deal of planning when it needs to be shipped abroad. Please do not hesitate to ask for further information I'll try to answer all your questions to the best of my knowledge. | ||
