This is a design for a kimono with a leafing vine surrounding a lacquer calligraphy box with inkstone and brushes in tones of grays and black with only the calligraphy brushes having red and yellow handles. The grain of the woodblock shows through the background of the kimono. Printed on mulberry paper and probably a leaf from a design album. There is a stain above the upper right sleeve, and a repaired 2 inch tear at the top of the leaf. The paper has yellowed slightly.
Oban tate-e: 9 1/8 in. x 12 ½ in., Image size: 6 ¼ in. x 7 ¾ in.

This is a design for a kimono textile that has skillfully incorporated the stylized woven fabric texture as part of the design as seen in the central field of flowering iris plants. The upper field appears to be a design of snowflakes, and the lower of an abstract water pattern. This was probably a leaf from an album of kimono designs. The print is of very good color, impression and condition on very thick paper, with some odd nicks and small tears on the edges, but not affecting the printed area.

The book, which translates to “Women’s Customs and Manners”, consists of 36 prints, all in excellent color and condition except No. 36, which has stains that migrated from the metallic printing on the interior back cover. Each print appears fresh with unfaded colors, some with embossing and metallic printing. Each print has the date and publisher’s information in the left margin. Dated Meiji 30 (1897), publisher: Matsuki Heikichi. The book is bound in traditional Japanese fashion with silk cords binding the prints together at the spine. The first page consists of the title and explanation. It too has been stained from migrated metallic printing on the interior cover. The second page lists the titles of each print. On the inside of the back cover the publisher’s information is given in English as well as a small reproduction of an early print of a street peddler. This sticker suggests an edition for English speaking clients or for export to England. The exterior covers show some wear and light brown staining.
This is an opportunity to own an entire series in excellent condition for about half the cost of buying the prints individually.
