This bronze sculpture of a ram is rather heavy cast and has well-delineated features in both face and coat. It is in good condition and it has its original applied reddish-brown patina overall. Ca. early 1900s

Heavy bronze mallet is cast with a stylized floral motif framed by a key fret design in a rectangular panel wrapping partially around the barrel-form mallet head. The mallet faces are both inlaid with copper and niello (copper, silver, sulphur alloy). The handle is inlaid with niello and incised with the artist’s signature reading “Kozan saku” (made by Kozan). The hole in the base of the handle was for a decorative silk cord, now missing. The mallet head is silvered overall except for the frame of the floral design which shows bronze. The narrow sides of the handle are silvered. The silver has worn off in some areas exposing the bronze base. There are areas of wear and some minor scratches and light tarnish. Rather heavy at five pounds.

Sculptures of Daikoku’s mallet were displayed in homes as a wish for prosperity particularly at New Year’s. Daikoku was one of Japan’s seven lucky gods, usually depicted sitting atop two rice bales holding his distinctive mallet. Daikoku is revered as a household protector of farmers and their land. His mallet alone is often displayed as the representative symbol for all his attributes.

Size of mallet head: 7 7/8 in. by 4 ¼ in. by 3 ¾ in.

Ca. early 1900s

This boat-shaped basket, designed for flower arrangements, is well-crafted from strips of bamboo that is stained a rich, dark reddish-brown and had acquired areas of further dark patina from age and use. The ship form probably represents a so-called treasure ship (takarabune) signifying wishes for good fortune and is usually displayed during the New Year’s season. Originally, a ceramic container would be placed inside to accommodate the flower arrangement and this basket is still very usable. Good condition with sturdy construction and no apparent breaks.

Length: 22 in.; Width: 8 ½ in.; Height: 9 ½ in.

In the style of Enku (1632-1695)

This tall, slender figure is carved from cedar in Enku's so-called hatchet style. Enku was a yamabashi, or traveling priest, whose mission was to serve the remote villages of rural Japan-- particularly those in the more northern parts. As acts of devotion, he produced thousands of Buddhist carvings over the course of his life-- many of which were given by him to the temples he served as well as the parishioners.

This figure is probably an image of the Buddhist rain and dragon deity, Zennyo Ryuo, standing upon a rock, holding a tablet against his chest with a dragon mask surmounting his head. It appears this carving was covered in a thin, dark lacquer, much of which is now worn away. Overall, the condition is good. Purchased in Kyoto in 1973, and sold as a 19th Century “Mingei” Buddha.

Height: 18 ½ in., Width: 3 in.
