Ca. 1800s
This Persian jar is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and iron brown and covered inside and out in a thick clear glaze with a blue-green tint. It is potted from a buff colored earthenware that is exposed around the lower portion with the glaze forming a rather thick and uneven curtain above. The footring is unglaze and the base is partially glazed. A design of three stylized birds encircles the body and the neck that is underglazed in brown and rises from the shoulder to end in a mouth with a rolled lip. The mouth has two chips from use. The footring shows some wear. The glaze has a broad crackle with some brown staining to the interior crackle. No repairs or body cracks. Overall good condition for earthenware of this type. Height: 8 in., Diameter: 6 in. |
