| A large pottery vessel with extensive incised and painted decoration. The body is divided into three horizontal registers, the upper and lower registers are decorated with continuous lines of rays and lappets, the central frieze is decorated with a procession of various animals. To the front of the main panel (below the trefoil spout) is a quatrefoil lotus flower, either side of the flower are two birds with outstretched wings facing each other. Behind the birds are two leopards which are depicted in the Archaic manner with frontal facing heads. At the back of the frieze (below the strap handle) is another figure of a bird, this is bordered by two grazing moufflons. Between all the animals are small flowers or rosettes, used to randomly fill empty spaces on the vase. The vessel itself consists of a squat bell-shaped body on a wide flat base, mounted with a broad strap handle and a trefoil-lipped spout. Greek, City of Corinth, 6th Century BC. Size: 14 x 14 cms. Surface worn and chipped, repaired from two large pieces with some minor infill. Provenance: Ex. Jan Heide Collection, Copenhagen, Denmark. Acquired before 1970. | ||
