| A hollow moulded terracotta figure depicting a couple in an intimate pose. Both figures are seated on a rocky outcrop (in a manner imitating Tanagra figures), the female figure appears to be seated on the left knee of the male. Both figures are draped and the female appears to have drawn her Himation over her head. Whether this is a representation of intimate daily life or a reference to a play or myth is unclear. Neither figure appears to be significantly distinguished as a satyr or maenad. Greek, 4th or 3rd Century BC. Allegedly from the Greek colonies at Naukratis in Egypt though similar sculpture has also been found on the Agora in Athens. Intact though worn, area of blackening caused by fire on the back. Size: 8.4 x 4.5 cms Ex. private collection, UK. Mounted on a 19th Century black lacquered mahogany display stand inscribed in gold lettering " Terracotta Group from Naukratis". Also inscribed with collection number "CA/T/15" | ||
