| A visually striking painted and burnished pottery vessel in the form of a kneeling warrior, mounted to the back with a hollow arched stirrup handle with a single spout. The warrior is shown kneeling with one knee raised, he holds a staff or club across his chest. The figure is wearing a short-sleeved tunic tied with a belt, he also wears armbands, a large necklace, spool-shaped earrings and an ornate crown. His hair is shown falling in two long locks over the back. Warriors and priests were the two most popular human designs reproduced in pottery by the Moche culture, reflecting the importance that they held in society. This is an astonishing example of the skill of the Pre-Columbian potters of South America, this is very much an under-rated area of antiquities collecting. Peru, Northern Coast, Moche/Mochica Culture, c. 200-800 AD. Tips of helmet and club lost, general chipping and minor wear. Size: 21 x 12 x 17 cms Ex. private collection, Surrey, UK. Inherited by the previous owner and originally purchased in London, possibly at Astarte Gallery, Mayfair. | ||
