| A mould for creating pottery appliqués made from a section of dense plaster or stucco. The mould itself is in the form of a dolphin or porpoise with a raised tail. The flippers are indicated by a fan-shaped pattern and the head is mounted with a scrolling crest which is typical of Classical depictions. Roman, 3rd or 4th Century AD. Probably from the colonies of North Africa and probably used to make decorative appliqués used on red ware pottery vessels of the same period. Damage as shown. Size: 10 x 9 x 2.4 cms Provenance: ex. Private collection, Sussex, UK. | ||
