| A black slip ware pottery oil lamp filler with a bird shaped body terminating in a long pointed spout. The upper side of the body is decorated with a geometric pattern based on the design found on military shields (scutum) and indicates that this vessel was possibly made for the use of the Roman army. Roman, 3rd or 4th Century AD. Possibly found in Winchester (UK) but probably made in or around Trier in Germany. Repaired from several pieces. Size: 18.4 x 8.5 cms Ex. collection: A. E. Reeves, Wiltshire, UK. Acquired 1970's from George Lambor, London (founder of the Antiquities Dealers Association). Old white painted collection numbers on base "48.57 130" and faint red ink inscription reading "Winchester". | ||
