This is a Satsuma cup and saucer from the Meiji period (early 20th century).
It is decorated in various overglaze colours and richly gilded. Both cup and saucer have several reserves with Japanese noblemen and -women. The underside of both cup and saucer is marked "Satsuma" in overglaze gold on black. The saucer also shows the "Shimazu mon", the family crest of the ruling family in Satsuma province at the time this item was produced. Diameter 8 cm for the cup and 13 cm for the saucer, perfect state, except for a little rubbing on the gold. |
