Beautiful antique Japanese butsudan (buddhist shrine for household use), made of lacquered wood in 3 sections, all black lacquer exterior, two sets of gilt lacquer interior doors, inside of shrine ornately carved and lacquered with black, gold and red lacquer; carved with phoenixes in clouds, birds and flowers, and miniature temple architecture; among the interior's many features are: red lacquer railing, columns carved with tiny baku and fu-dogs, many surfaces for offerings, hanging gilt lanterns, small storage compartment with gold lacquer sliding panel decorated with flowers, a slide out tray. The middle section of the exterior of the butsudan has two drawers with red lacquer interiors and a lacquered pull out shelf with another smaller pull out shelf extending from it's right side, the base of the butsudan has a large drawer, Meiji Period. Size: 54 1/4" high x 21 3/4" wide x 19 1/2" deep. Width with doors open: 37" wide.
