Beautiful Japanese antique 2-section mizuya tansu (kitchen chest), made with hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood frame, sliding doors with vertical slats made of sugi (cryptomeria) wood and keyaki (elm) wood panels with dramatic grain. The top section has two compartments each covered with sliding panels. The smaller compartment has panels with wire mesh and keyaki wood.
Just below the compartments are a row of three small drawers and a row of 5 larger drawers all made with beautiful keyaki wood and with iron ring-shaped drawer pulls. The bottom section consists of one large compartment covered with large sliding panels with vertical slats, copper hardware and keyaki panels to match the sliders on the top section. Each compartment has an interior shelf. Beautiful finish. Gorgeous piece! Meiji Period (1868-1912).
