Kabuki actor representing a lion from the dance in the play "Kagami Jishi". In the first part of the dance, Yayoi dances holding the lion mask which is used in New Year celebrations. As the dance proceeds she is filled with the spirit of the mask. In the second part of the dance, the costume and make-up are the conventional representation of a lion, indicating that Yayoi has now been transformed into the lion. Figure has beautiful painted face and decorative cream and gold garments with blue and yellow garments folded underneath. The figure is in a dancing stance, bent over with white hair all around and almost covering face. Standing on a woven base with cloth edges. Taisho period (1912-1926)
