Antique Japanese kaidon tansu (step chest), made of sugi (cryptomeria) wood with a lovely deep brown lacquer finish. The top section has one large drawer under the very top step and a large compartment opened by a hinged door. There is also a smaller drawer on the right. The bottom section has a very large compartment opened by sliding panels with vertical slats matching those on the door of the top section. There are 2 more small drawers on the lower right side. Hardware is made of iron and includes hirute shaped drawer pulls. Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)
