Japanese antique choba tansu (merchant's chest), made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood. This tansu has 6 external drawers of various sizes and two compartments with sliding panels. The bottom set of sliders has horizontal slats. There is a small safe box on the right hand side with two small interior drawers also made of hinoki wood. Black Iron hardware hand forged for each panel. Choba tansu's would have been originally used to store important documents and items for a merchants business.
