An antique Japanese Isho Tansu (Kimono chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Three large substantial storage drawers with a partial width bottom drawer and two small drawers behind the hinged door. All original hand made iron fittings and wiped Urushi lacquer finish. The sides feature a swivel-up handle used with a wood pole to allow two persons to carry the chest from place to place and two smaller handles to position the chest for placement in a room. Construction features straight dovetail Japanese joinery and hardened wooden nails. Warabite handles on the drawers and lock plates featuring the full moon design used to prevent thieves from cutting the locking mechanism.
