A painter of historical genre scenes of Victorian life, Frith was born near Ripon, Yorkshire. He was forced by his ambitious parents to take up painting against his will. He studied at Sass’s Academy and the Royal Academy School. He was elected an associate to the Royal Academy in 1845 and a member in 1852. During the 1840’s he was a member of “The Clique” with Richard Dadd, A.L. Egg, H.N. O’Neil and John Philip. He often painted literary subjects early in his career, but eventually moved into painting scenes from modern life, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. Frith exhibited at the Royal Academy for sixty-two years, from 1840-1902 and also at the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
