Kasen’s given name was Masao. He studied Nihon-ga (traditional Japanese style painting) under Keigetsu Matsubayashi. He was primarily known for his "bijin-ga" (classic representations of beautiful women usually wearing a kimono) including "Twenty-four Sections of Tokyo" and "Twenty-four Examples of Charming Figures" which were published by Shinbisha in Taisho (1912-1926) and early Showa era (1926-1989).
