August Richard Zimmermann (Ger.1820-1875)
Extensive Alpine Landscape

August Richard Zimmermann
(German, 1820-1875)

Oil on canvas, signed.

The brother of artistic siblings, Albert, Max and Robert, Richard Zimmerman ultimately distinguished himself as a landscape painter. He began his artistic training at the Dresden Academy where he studied under Ludwig Richter. Following that instruction, he joined his brother Albert in Munich where he continued to refine his training.

Zimmerman began his career painting historical genre scenes before turning his focus to landscapes. His early landscapes mark this transition with the inclusion of many figures. Unfortunately, mid-life financial difficulties forced him to abandon painting in favor of more lucrative commercial work as a gilder in Prague. After many years, he was able to return to Munich where he spent the remainder of his life pursuing his artistic vocation.

His works are held in the permanent collections of the City Museum Bautzen, Modern Gallery Dresden, and Museum Revoltella in Trieste among others.

Zimmerman is listed in "Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zu Gegenwart" by Thieme/Becker and "Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs" by Bénézit .
