The Runaway Pig Daniel Carter Beard (American, 1850-1941) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed and dated: “1895”. A highly respected artist and illustrator, Beard may be better remembered as one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America. In recognition of this contribution, Mt. Beard, near Mt. McKinley, is named for him. Educated at Worall’s Academy and the Art Student’s League, he first exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association. He won many medals for his work. He was a prolific illustrator and writer, contributing regularly to St. Nicholas Magazine. Professionally, he served as an editor to Ladies Home Journal, Woman’s Home Companion, Pictorial Review and American Boy. He was also an associate editor to Life magazine. In addition to illustrating Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Beard wrote and illustrated many books on the outdoors and animals. He was an active member of the Society of Illustrators and served as its president in 1914. Beard is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and The Illustrator in America 1860-2000 by Reed.
