Fishing Boats Off the Coast Oil-on-canvas, signed lower right F.D. Briscoe was born in Baltimore and began his painting career at the early age of 16, studying under marine painter Edward Moran (1829-1901) in Philadelphia. He travelled extensively along the east coast and studied in both London and Paris. His many extended ocean voyages gave him great familiarity with his favorite subject of the ocean and its ships in all kinds of weather. He was best known for his painting "A Breezy Day Off Dieppe", which was exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Although by his death he was well known for a series of mural paintings of the Battle of Gettysburg, most of his subjects were fishing boats and coastal scenes, which are the most valued today. During his lifetime, Briscoe exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia (1863 & 1885) and the Brooklyn Art Association, New York (1873). Some of his works are now in the permanent collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Reading Museum of Art.
