Paul Emile Chabas (French, 1869-1937)
La Baigneuse

Paul Emile Chabas (French, 1869-1937)

Oil-on-canvas, signed.

See Sothebys, New York, 19th C. European Painting Sale of October 27, 1988, for another version of this painting.

Paul-Emile Chabas was born in Nantes in 1869, and died in Paris in 1937. He was the student of Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury. He obtained the Prix Nationale du Salon in 1899; a gold medal at the Universal Expedition in 1900; the Medal of Honor in the Salon of 1912, and was made the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1902 and promoted to officer in 1913. He was a member of the Comite des Artistes Francais. Chabas is best known as a painter of portraits. He was influenced by his trips abroad to Norway, Algeris, and Greece. La Baigneuse is another version of the painting, Au Crepuscule, which is in the Musee du Luxembourg, and which was exhibited at the Salon of 1905. Both are in the manner of many of Chabas' paintings which depict a nude figure bathing in the twilight.
He is listed in Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs.

Frame Size: 29.5" x 21"
