Hill was a best known as a painter and etcher. His subjects were mostly architectural scenes and still lifes. He was educated at Dulwich College and studied painting at St. John's Wood Art School 1912-14, and the Royal College of Art 1919-20. He became a member of the Royal Institute of British Painters; the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor; the Royal Society of British Artists; and the Society of Graphic Art. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy; the New English Art Club; the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors; the London Group; and others, in England and abroad. Some of Hill's works are represented in the following collections: the Royal Society of British Artists; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; the Society of Graphic Artists; and others.
He was the official war artist on the western front from 1917 to 1919, and he later published many books on art.
