Portrait of a Young Woman from Snow Hill, Maryland Manuel Joachim de Franca (American, 1808-1865) Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1858. Provenance: Given to Judge and Mrs. Thomas Johnson, ca. 1900, by the granddaughter of the sitter, then by descent to Catherine Eaton.
Painting, Oval: 24” x 20” Portrait painter Manuel Joachim de Franca was active in Philadelphia from 1830 to 1842, then in St. Louis, Missouri from 1844 on. His best known subject was Henry Clay, the Kentucky senator and statesman. De Franca was known for his romantic portraits, beautifully exemplified by this unidentified young woman. The delicate pink tones in her dress and face contrast with the open blue sky in the background. A wreath of flowers in her hair, meanwhile, highlight her comely appearance and signify, perhaps, the transience of youth and beauty. De Franca is represented in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Missouri Historical Society. He is also listed in Who Was Who in American Art (Falk, 1999) |
