The Letter Writer Belisario Gioja (Italian, 1829-1906) Watercolor on paper, signed and located “Roma.” Provenance: Tilden-Thurber, Providence, Rhode Island.
Sight size: 20” x 13.5” Born in Rome in 1829, Belisario Gioja was a painter of Italian genre subject. He died on July 10, 1906. His son, Edoardo Gioja, also became a successful genre painter. Both exhibited in galleries and museums in Rome, Florence, Paris and London. Gioja is listed in Bénézit’s Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs as well as Hook and Poltimore’s Popular 19th Century Painting. |
