Moghul Palace in a Landscape Daniel Charles Grose (American, 1835-ca. 1890) Oil on canvas, signed and dated: 1870.
Painting size: 11.5 x 17 An extensive traveler, landscape painter Daniel Charles Grose was active in Washington, D.C. during the 1870s and 1880s. He married local artist, Estella Harriet, in 1880. Together, they embarked on a five-year tour around the world and returned to the District in 1886. Inspired, perhaps, by their adventures abroad, Grose painted this fanciful vision of a Moghul Palace reminiscent of India's famous Taj Mahal. Sumptuous gardens surround the lakeside building, complete with romantic figures strolling along curved lanes. Groses vibrant color choices and exacting portrayals of trees and flowers recall Moghul manuscript paintings with their rich colors and exquisite details. Daniel Charles Grose is listed in Who Was Who in American Art (Falk, 1999) and The Artists of Washington, D.C. 1796-1996 (McManhan, 1996). |
