An extensive traveler, landscape painter Daniel Charles Grose was active in Washington, D.C. during the 1870’s and 1880’s. He married local artist, Estella Harriet, in 1880. Together, they embarked on a five-year tour around the world and returned to the District in 1886.

Inspired, perhaps, by their adventures abroad, Grose painted this fanciful vision of a Moghul Palace reminiscent of India's famous Taj Mahal. Sumptuous gardens surround the lakeside building, complete with romantic figures strolling along curved lanes. Grose’s vibrant color choices and exacting portrayals of trees and flowers recall Moghul manuscript paintings with their rich colors and exquisite details.
