Gordon Coutts (American, 1880-1937) Returning Home Oil on canvas, signed.
Painting size: 20” x 30” Born in Aberdeen Scotland, Coutts spent the rest of his life studying, traveling and painting all over the world. He trained at the Melbourne National Gallery School in Australia, the Royal Art School of London, and finally the Académie Julian in Paris. Later he would travel to Mexico, Spain and Morocco. Finally, in 1923, Coutts setltled in Palm Springs, California where he built a Morrocan inspired estate called Dar Marroc. However, he continued to travel and paint the American West. Coutts’ paintings mirror the diverse cultures he encountered during his travels. Yet he is best known for his desert and mountain landscapes, as well as his figurative work. Acclaimed during his lifetime, Coutts exhibited at the Sacramento Exhibtion where he was awarded a gold medal. Additionally, his works were displayed at the Paris Salon in 1913 and the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915, among other places.
