Maria Vos (Dutch, 1824-1906) Cows Watering in a Stream Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dated 1855.
Painting size: 28.35” x 24.5” Maria Vos was born in Amsterdam in 1824. She was renowned for her still lifes, reminiscent of those in the seventeenth-century Dutch tradition, involving flowers, fish, fruit, baskets and porcelain. Additionally, Vos was an accomplished landscape painter. A pupil of Petrus Kiers, she began her formal studies at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam in 1847. However, her education did not stop there. She spent the rest of her life continuing to learn and improve herself through various trips to Paris, Belgium, and along the Rhine. In 1854 Vos settled with fellow artist Adriana Haanen in the town of Oosterbeek. There she painted, sketched and drew the surrounding landscape. No doubt, this painting, created only a year after her move to Oosterbeek, depicts the rural and bucolic beauty of her new home. Vos continued to live and work in Oosterbeek until the end of her life in 1906. Today her work can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
