| Here we have an 1891 appointment card which belonged to 16 year old Sadie Elliott. She was a patient of SAMUEL D. RISLEY, M.D. at THE WILLS' EYE HOSPITAL of PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Dr. Risley was a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology. He was an instructor of ophthalmology and professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was named SURGEON AT THE DISPENSARY OF DISEASES OF THE EYE. The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was the first medical school founded in the United States. He was the first physician in the United States to convince a school board (The Philadelphia School Board) to allow medical inspections of school children. The board appointed Dr. Risley and three other physicians to test the vision of children in the schools of Philadelphia. Believe it or not, some parents objected to these free examinations, and the project was later dropped! Dr. Risley's Philadelphia home is listed on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. This appointment card is of heavy stock. It is 4"x2.75". The Wills Eye Hospital is one of the world's premier eye hospitals to this day. Please be sure to see our other catalog listings. New items are added weekly. Thank you for visiting with us! | |||||
