Antique Mexican Retablo - 18th Century Spanish Colonial
Old and beautiful Spanish Colonial retablo from Mexico, dating from the late 18th or very early 19th century. The painting was done with oil pigments, on hand-laid paper that was glued onto a thick hand-hewn pine wood panel. There is evidence that the paper was laid onto the panel when the retablo was painted as there are traces of blue paint on the sides of the panel.

This piece measures 5.75" x 8.5" and is unframed.

This Mexican religious painting features delicate, fine brushwork in the beloved "Rosa" style, using a rose undercoating to warm the skin tones and light colors. The details are beautifully painted, especially the face of the saint, his quill pen, and the golden cross icon in his right hand.

The quill pen usually indicates that the subject was a scholar and the person depicted appears to be a Saint of the Franciscan order.

This piece is in good condition, as shown in the photographs. There are small losses to the surface along the middle of the image, and some of the paper has deteriorated at the bottom edge of the painting. The surface shows a darkened patina and a few small spots of wax. The back of the retablo has remnants of tape. This piece could be restored if desired, but displays nicely in it's present condition.
