California Studio Pottery Art Deco Vase by Susi Singer
Hand-Sculpted Studio Pottery Vase by Susi Singer, circa 1940s

Fine and rare ceramic sculpture-centerpiece vase by Austrian-California woman artist, sculptor, and ceramist, Susi Singer (1891-1965). This piece is completely handmade in the Austrian Secessionist-WPA-Art Deco style, and is an endearing depiction of three smiling young women wearing colorful dresses. It was made to display flowers and has four integrated rims to separate them. A very nice and useful design for flower arranging.

This sculpture measures 9.25"" tall and has a diameter of 7" at the widest. Circa 1940s and made while Susi Singer was living in Southern California. This centerpiece vase is signed on the bottom, under the glaze with her initials, "SS" and the number "124".

Susi Singer was born in Austria in 1895 and studied with in Vienna with Professor Michael Powolny. While in Austria she produced ceramics for the Wiener Werkstatte, as well as pieces from her own studio, which she established in 1925. She won many awards and prizes while in Europe. In the late 1930s she moved to the United States, making her home in Pasadena, California. She continued making ceramic sculptures and other works of art, in California, until her death in 1965. Both her Austrian and Californian works are in many important private collections and museums around the world.

The elegant expressiveness of her figures, the wonderful impressionist treatment of the forms, and the richly glazed surface decoration are what made her one of the worlds best known ceramic sculptors, and this sculpture is a fine and large example of her later work.

This piece is in very good condition, and although there are several very tiny and shallow glaze chips on the tips of the girl's noses, they could easily be fixed if desired (they are not very noticeable and the piece looks great just as it is). There are no cracks, hairlines, or repairs. It is a fine and rare example of Susi Singer's art pottery sculpture and will be a museum quality addition to any collection of ceramics.

The price of this piece includes insured shipping by UPS Ground, within the continental United States!
