Chinese rank badge Mandarin Square ex Christie's
A good Chinese Mandarin square, the gauze embroidered in kossu in a predominantly blue and white palette, with the fifth civil rank silver pheasant. Lined in pale blue silk. Qing dynasty, 19th century. Some small losses but generally good. 29 cms. wide.

Provenance: Charles Hulme, 1848-1923, founder of 'The Studio' magazine, friend of and traveller for Arthur Liberty, founder of the eponymous department store. Sold Christie's London 1997. Similar kesi badges in this same blue and white palette are illustrated in Linda Wrigglesworth 'A Mark of Excellence' ref. 8788. Genuine badges, with old provenance, are now scarce in the West. N.B. For some reason the photographs make the badge appear a little dirty in the striped lower area. This seems to be an optical illusion - the badge is quite clean.

All items are sold are guaranteed genuine and as described and a full refund will be given should any description prove to be incorrect.
