| Incredible handwork, most likely by several ladies of the Altar Guild, covers this detailed piece! The words in German heavily padded gothic lettering, proclaims "Innocent Lamb of God, Have Mercy on us". As I studied it, I found it to include so much symbolism. My interpretation... The reclining wounded Lamb on the Altar, symbolizes Christ in His sacrificial role and personifies innocence, gentleness and humility. The Sword of the Spirit, and the blood signify the sacrifice. The burning torch symbolizes witnessing and the fire, God is our light. The grapes and wheat sheafs signify Holy Communion. Bursting stylized lillies symbolize His Resurrection. Impressive piece, agree? It is of very fine light to med. weight linen measuring 43" X 30" with and additional 3.5" of hand made Cluny lace all around, of course sewn on by hand stitches. Circa 1900, Swiss. Sorry the photos don't show it at it's best! It is beautiful! What more can I say? | ||
