A fine intact example of a Maya ceremonial whistle (c.100-860AD). The figure depicted is a seated warrior or shaman wearing a hawk or eagle mask and sporting a necklace of square pieces of jade or possibly gold. He is holding an implement in his hands which very much resembles and upside-down yoke worn by ball players of the period. When blown, the whistle emits a deep rich sound resembling the call of a night owl. The figure measures 5 1/4" in height by 4" in width.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY WELL MADE CHANCAY FIGURE from the Central Coast Of Peru dating c.1000-1450AD. This beautifully fired and painted effigy figure measures 9 1/2" in height by 7" in width. It is highly fired and very hard unlike many soft and somewhat crumbly ceramics from the period. The chocolate brown paint is in excellent condition depicting upturned rectangles on the cheeks with dual avian motifs enclosed in a headband. Chancay pieces of this quality are becoming difficult to find.
