A LARGE INTACT PRE-COLUMBIAN MOCHE EFFIGY VESSEL FROM PERU
This ceramic piece depicts a confident and elegant Moche nobelman dating from c.a.100-800AD from the coastal region of Northern Peru. It is a large and impressive creation measuring a full 10” in height and 5” at the widest. It measures 3” in depth. The background pigment is a dark buff accentuated with a deep flesh tone face and hands. There is ritual scarafication or tatooing on the face and cheeks in a rich cinnamon hue that matches the knee length tunic worn by the nobleman. He has wide almond-shaped eyes outlined in white and a thick white necklace gracing his throat. His ears are adorned with large rounded decorations which helps to further identify him as a man of rank. The piece is highly burnished and note the careful incising on both hands and mouth. Each finger resting on his chest is incised to outline the five fingers on each hand. Note that the molding lines have been totally “disappeared” which is a sign of a caring artist. His forward facing almond eyed gaze is both austere and dignified. He has large ovoid perked ears. He is wearing a large quadrangular turban headdress. There are three almond-shaped raised elements on the rear of the piece that could possibly represent crop seeds which would indicate that this particular effigy had an agricultural significance. The piece is in excellent intact original condition and will come with a COA. Feel free to contact me with any other queries.

BEAUTIFULLY EXECUTED MOCHE FINELINE DEER HUNTER CANCHERO
This finely made Moche canchero (sometimes called a “popper” or “dipper”) comes from Northern Peru and dates c.a.100-860AD. It stands 10” tall and is 6” at the widest. The front section of the vessel is slipped with a pale cream colored pigment and the design elements are executed in a cinnamon brown. The scene depicted is a Moche warrior in full war garb making the final kill of a deer he has cornered. Only the Moche nobility was allowed to hunt deer. The scene is taking place in a desert environment as the stylized plantlife forms depicted are various forms of cacti and thorny bushes. The netting bellow may represent the method used by the hunter to trap the prey before ritually finishing it off. The rear side of the canchero is a deep terra cotta color with a cream colored “squid-like” motif circling the opening. There are numerous mineral deposits attesting to the age of the piece. It is intact and unrestored and will come with a COA. You will not find a better piece for the money!

MOCHE ” DANCE OF DEATH” VESSEL FROM PRE-COLUMBIAN PERU. To those unaccustomed to Moche iconography this vessel will appear macabre at best. In reality, according to the highly acclaimed book “Moche Fineline Painting” by Donnan and Mcllelland, you are witnessing a joyful celbration taking place in what might be referred to as Moche heaven. This globular single stirrup bottle measures 6” in diameter and stands 8” in height and dates from c.a.100-800AD. The background slip is pale buff in color and the various motifs are painted using a red-brown pigment. You will note five animated emaciated skeletal human figures encircling the vessel in a lively dance of drunken glee as the numerous floating vessels in the scene would have contained chicha “corn beer.”Also note the food vessels for the eternal banquet. The figures have long portruding tongues perhaps signifying a singing festival as well. At the base of the stirrup handle there is a rectangular frame incorporating cross-hatched diamond motifs. The jar is intact save for one nickle-sized probe hole which has been professionally restored. For other examples of this type see pg.48 and pg.117 in the book referenced above. The piece is guaranteed absolutely authentic as presented and you will receive a COA.

A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THE PRE-COLUMBIAN CRAB DIETY FROM NORTHERN PERU. This Moche canchero (dipper) depicting the crab diety (see further examples on pages 174 & 175 of the book “Moche Fineline Painting” by Donnan & Mclelland) dates from c.a. 100-800AD and stands 10” in height by 7” in diameter. The background slip is a buff color and the motif is drawn in shades of cinnamon brown. The upper human head of the composite creature is wearing an ornate plumed headdress. He has a confident fierce demeanor with mouth agape and tongue extended. The lower section represents a stylized crab with a wide torso and raised claws. It depicts both extended side “arms” as well as crouching human legs with knee pads and coverings reaching half way up the leg. The face of the crab is severe and fierce with a snarling fanged mouth and upturned almond shaped eyes with solid brown center circles. The body of the vessel is totally in intact with no restoration. A section of the painted design on the upper left of the vessel has had the pigment professionally enhanced as it was somewhat faded and lessened the visual impact of the creature. A COA will be provided with the vessel affirming the information given above.

MOCHE PHASE IV FINELINE STIRRUP JAR DEPICTING THE “STROMBUS MONSTER” This animated and elaborately decorated Moche stirrup jar comes from Pre-Columbian Northern Peru and dates from c.a. 500-700AD. It stands 11 1/2” tall with a 5” diameter. There are two large “Strombus Monsters”...A term coined by Christopher Donnan and Donna McClelland in their definitive study of Moche fineline art published as “Moche Fineline Painting, It’s Evolution And Its Artists.” According to their definition The Strombus Monster is a composite creature made up of a strombus shell with a large eared seprent head, and a feline body with claws. This particular vessel has two such creatures with human legs extending beneath the body. They are wielding tumis (ceremonial knifes)and are in the process of stalking a fish and a crustacean. There are numerous other odd stylized fish as well as an eel-like creature floating around the central figures. The background color is an ochre yellow and the creatures are painted with a red-brown pigment. The fierce snarling Strombus Monsters are impressive with their horned noses, wide fanged mouths, determined demeanor, and long extended tongues. The vessel has had minor enhancement to the paint to bring out the design elements and is in otherwise excellent original condition which will be confirmed in the COA which will accompany the piece.

A TOP QUALITY PRE-COLUMBIAN MOCHE VESSEL.
This is one of those unusually fine pieces of Nazca craftsmanship. Unfortunately, it was broken during shipping and has been professionally reassembled from several large shards. This is reflected in the price or it would be a great deal more. The piece has a rounded bowl form curving outwardly and measures 4 1/2” in height and 6” in diameter and dates from c.a. 100-800AD from the Northern Coast of Peru. The polychrome colors include black, buff, claret, cream, white, scarlet, and reddish brown. The vessel is highly fired and thin walled and is adorned with two abstract fantastical creatures as well as a number of trophy heads. There are two elaborate figures encircling the piece. One has feline characteristics with almond shaped eyes and is wearing a winged forehead ornament while the other is much more of an anthropomorphilogical being with rounded eyes and long tendril-like arms extending the full length of the body. This is a highly sophisticated work of art which will appeal to the collector of the best at the best price as well.
Price below its value to reduce inventory and make more room. Don't hesitate on this one.
