| THIS LARGE BEAUTIFULLY INCISED stone double-headed zoomorphic grinding vessel comes from the Atlantic Watershed zone of Costa Rica and dates c.a. 1000-1500AD. The intact metate measures 12" in length by 6 1/2" in width by 4" in height. It is composed of a slate gray volcanic stone with tiny dark spots that sparkle in bright light. Both heads are deeply incised with a growling countenance and there is a line of incised triangles and quadrangles outlining the upper rim. Each of the 4 legs is incised with two triangles with a circular motif in the center. The surface shows mild weathering as would be expected of an authentic stone piece of this age. The pictures are very clear and show the vessel exactly as it appears. It was most likely used for grinding ceremonial substances as it is too small and ornate to have been a utilitarian corn grinding vessel. It is a fine piece for a very fair price. | ||
