The detail is extremely fine and worthy of a Daimyo. It is signed on the base Tadasu and comes in a modern kiri-box . A milieu of color decorates the overall burnt red of this fine small Aka-Raku Chawan dating from the early 20th century. Yellow, black, green and olive cloud the hand built walls. Interesting about the glaze is its glassy surface, almost like a clear over-top of the color. From the kilns of Kyoto, it is stamped on the base Yoshinari, and measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, 10.5 cm (4-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, and comes in a modern wooden box.

A fine wan-gata chawan covered in thick rust-colored glaze forming five drips around the white clay of the base. The glaze appears predominately red, but is actually diffused with varying shades of yellow, black and olive, creating quite a sensational festival for the eyes, enhanced by the dark of the tea room. Imagine the yellows brought out by candle-light. High fired and thin walled, it is stamped on the base Kozan (the bright mountain). Likely from the kilns of Kyoto, the bowl is 6.3 cm ...click for details

A nobori-fuji crest wraps over the rim of this 19th century chawan, the kodai foot quite small, a simple button cut and slightly sculpted. The white glaze has absorbed some color over time, creating a fine sense of antiquity. The simplicity of the bowl is contrasted by the sumptuous blue of the design. Likely from the kilns of Kyoto, the bowl is unsigned, 4-1/2 inches (11 cm) diameter, 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition, enclosed in a modern wooden box.

A robust Shino Chawan decorated with a traveler’s hat and walking stick; wiped on glaze under thick white feldspar revealing raw earth beneath. An excellent example of Shino ware signed and stamped KoTenKi (Old Hope of Heaven) on the base, the shattered glaze darkened with use creating a warm antique feel. The wheel-turned belted form is 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, 10.5 cm (4-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, likely 75 to 100 years old. It comes in a modern wooden box.

An unusual sign cut from a plank of worm eaten wood inlayed with two ceramic characters reading Whispering Pines. The fresh green glaze intimates the evergreen branches of the pine against the dark shadows of bark and forest. From right to left, it reads Sho-Sei. It would be an excellent addition to a Northern Tea Room… The sign is roughly 15-1/2 by 8 by 1 inches 40 x 21 x 2.5 cm) and is in perfectly displayable antique condition. The character Sho appears to have been repaired twice, top a ...click for details

A wooden tray carved worm eaten kiri with the image of a red lacquered flying bat, the wormed sections acting like clouds in the dark wood night sky. This tray was purposely made, carved using an existing piece of wormed wood which exemplifies the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi. The wood is quite thick, 2 cm thick on the edge, the tray measuring roughly 11 inches (28 cm) square, 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) to the rim. It is perfect for service of Sencha tea. The tray is signed beneath Kinkoku and c ...click for details

Crested-ibis huddle among dried grasses in the frigid waters of a winter river, a scene common throughout the long Japanese winter, depicted in lacquer on the raw polished surface of this bamboo flower vessel dating from the later Meiji to Taisho period. All exposed areas of the vase, top, bottom and inside the basin, are perfectly lacquered black. The birds are performed with gold and silver over black and red lacquer, worn to a very attractive gradient of color. The vase is 13-1/2 inches (3 ...click for details
