A small and very rare Koro incense burner in the shape of an elephant by Kyoto artist Tanaka Ikka enclosed in the original signed wooden box. On the back of the elephant is a removable red blanket forming the lid of the incense chamber decorated with gold and silver clouds and pierced with three holes. The Koro is roughly 7 inches (17.5 cm) long, signed on the belly and dated 1904. A kanabun bright blue insect climbs slowly up a broad leafed flower on this early 20th century silk scroll by master painter Nishiyama Suisho (1879-1958). It is bordered in pale blue cloth patterned with swirling ripples, the ichimonji featuring a pattern of water-skippers, a great summer reference, and features solid ivory rollers. An antique Dora (gong) striker wrapped in deer skin with an elegant and expertly carved bamboo handle. The bamboo is deeply incised with stamps and signatures in a running sosho script. Among others, names on the handle read Ogon, Hobutsu and Sekko. Although found in Japan, it is possibly, like many revered ritual instruments, originally of Chinese origin. A floral spray in deep blue decorates the whit porcelain of this deep Haisen (sake cup washing bowl) by Takahashi Dohachi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Pampas grass and wild flowers spread out across the smooth white, signed on the base Kachutei Dohachi-Sei. A spool of silk thread twists around a sprig of yellow flowers, the color in enamel over raw brass marked on the base Ando-Zo (made by Ando) enclosed in the original signed and sealed wooden box. Wrapped and riveted corners outside, inside heavy cloth gilded with flashes of applied gold. It comes on a carrying tray of the same design. A milieu of color decorates the overall burnt red of this fine small Aka-Raku Chawan dating from the early 20th century. Yellow, black, green and olive cloud the hand built walls. Interesting about the glaze is its glassy surface, almost like a clear over-top of the color. From the kilns of Kyoto, it is stamped on the base Yoshinari, and measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, 10.5 cm (4-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, and comes in a modern wooden box.
