A milieu of color decorates the overall burnt red of this fine small Aka-Raku Chawan dating from the early 20th century. Yellow, black, green and olive cloud the hand built walls. Interesting about the glaze is its glassy surface, almost like a clear over-top of the color. From the kilns of Kyoto, it is stamped on the base Yoshinari, and measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, 10.5 cm (4-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, and comes in a modern wooden box.

A fine wan-gata chawan covered in thick rust-colored glaze forming five drips around the white clay of the base. The glaze appears predominately red, but is actually diffused with varying shades of yellow, black and olive, creating quite a sensational festival for the eyes, enhanced by the dark of the tea room. Imagine the yellows brought out by candle-light. High fired and thin walled, it is stamped on the base Kozan (the bright mountain). Likely from the kilns of Kyoto, the bowl is 6.3 cm ...click for details

A nobori-fuji crest wraps over the rim of this 19th century chawan, the kodai foot quite small, a simple button cut and slightly sculpted. The white glaze has absorbed some color over time, creating a fine sense of antiquity. The simplicity of the bowl is contrasted by the sumptuous blue of the design. Likely from the kilns of Kyoto, the bowl is unsigned, 4-1/2 inches (11 cm) diameter, 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition, enclosed in a modern wooden box.

A robust Shino Chawan decorated with a traveler’s hat and walking stick; wiped on glaze under thick white feldspar revealing raw earth beneath. An excellent example of Shino ware signed and stamped KoTenKi (Old Hope of Heaven) on the base, the shattered glaze darkened with use creating a warm antique feel. The wheel-turned belted form is 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall, 10.5 cm (4-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, likely 75 to 100 years old. It comes in a modern wooden box.

Stylized waves undulate about the shoulder of this rare 18th century Ao-Bizen (Blue Bizen) tsubo storage urn marked with pale color. The piece has magnificent keshiki (scenery), with a shi-seki in the side, a large divot elsewhere, pale licks of soft brown hi-iro and three tiny finger marks appear to be that of a child. The piece was made in the coil method, with a flat base attached to coils of clay rising up and smoothed. The base is quite worn, with the remainder of the support marks still ...click for details

Regal purple rushes down over pale crackled green wispy streaks on this thin walled Bairin Yaki Tea Container enclosed in a fine period Kiri-wood shiho-box. A delightful fresh water container decorated with a vivid scene of scholars sharing tea out of doors ina combined literati/Kenzan style. It is created in the bold and decorative Kenzan manner, and shows Oribe coloring with a splash of amber at the rim; likely to have been produced somewhere in the Seto region during the Meiji period. On the lid is a tea pot stand, fire tongs and a feather for preparing the ash. All of the overglaze decoration is done in whimsical fashion, creating a bright an ...click for details
