| A kitsune leaps playfully over the water in the light of a crescent moon in this large silk painting by Tanami Gyokusho. Ink and light color on silk in a patterned silk border with white satin piping. It is 97.5 x 197 cm (38-1/2 x 77-1/2 inches) and in overall fine condition. There is some cupping to the scroll, not surprising considering its size, and there is one repair to a worm hole just under the upper border. Born in 1878 in Mie, Gakusho studied under a number of important artists, beginning with Tanaka Seisho he moved to Kyoto in 1897, where he studied Nanga and the Shijo school under Kono Bairei, Kubota Beisen and Nomura Bunko. Settling in Tokyo, he was widely exhibited and awarded at the Bunten and Bijutsukyokai-Ten. He died in 1928. Work by this artist is held in the Mie Prefectural Museum among others. | |||||||||||||
