Puppies roll around the silk panels of this fully restored two panel screen by Sakaguchi Isso. Judging by the style of the mounting it was originally a framed exhibition work transferred to a screen. We have had the screen re-mounted reflecting the original style without re-painting. The playful creatures huddle together in the sun for a morning nap on a ground of fallen leaves simulated with ura-haku, a technique of applying metal gilding to the back of the silk before mounting. It is 162 x 155.5 cm (64 x 61 inches) and in excellent condition with patterned silk border, genuine lacquer frame and gold-flecked backing paper. Sakaguchi Isso (Seijiro) was born in The Minato-ku district of Osaka in 1902. At the age of 16 he spent one year in Kyoto at the Taiheiyo Gakkai Kenkyusho (Pacific Arts Research Center). Two years later he was apprenticed under Kawabata Ryushi before settling in Tokyo. He first gained National attention at the Inten National Exhibition in 1927. From 1929 he was displayed at the Seiryuten and there was prized in 1931. He was to become one of the three leading pupils of Ryushi. After the closing of the Seiryuten in 1950, he moved to the Nitten, then the Shinko-Ten in 1958 and finally worked to found a new exhibition, the Seienkai in 1960. He died in Tokyo in 1997. |
