| Miniature pines march among moss-covered rocks across this kama-byobu (tearoom screen) depicted in a style reminiscent of the Rimpa School in watercolor on a crinkled silver foil ground. The scene is signed Juzan and dates from the first quarter of the 20th Century (late Meiji or Taisho period). The control shown by the artist in creating a scene with watercolors on a non-absorbent surface is superb, with the color pooling to create the stones, trunks and cones on the trees, thousands of sharp dashes in various shades of green to depict the pine needles. It measures 74 by 21-1/2 inches (188 x 55 cm) fully open. The screen has just been re-backed with forest green paper-cloth, and there is no damage to the front or back. | ||||||||||
