| A powerful original calligraphy work by the infamous Zen priest Nakahara Nantenbo (1839-1925); the fine white paper bordered in blue gray patterned brocade. The seven character script reads Wa Shi Tsukusu San Un Kai Getsu no Sho, which translates (loosely) Words fail the impact of Mountains, Rain, Sea and Moon. The script has been written with a single dipping of the brush, the characters begin a course black, but as the ink is dispersed on the paper, they fade to almost transparent gray; the final characters more Flying White than ink. This blends well with the feeling of eternity in the inscription. It is as if overwhelmed by emotion, he felt the need to get it all out at once, and yet there is not enough ink to capture the phrase. A very nice touch. The work has been completely restored with quality material, and comes enclosed in a wooden box. It measures 17-1/2 by 78-1/2 inches (45 x 199 cm). | |||||||||
