Antique Japanese Taisho Screen Set by Kubota Chikubun A
A pair of Taisho period screens featuring cranes in lush foliage by Kubota Chikubun (b. 1880), the style defining this brief and powerful period of Japanese art history. A pheasant looks out over the waters of a garden pool, a bamboo spout pouring water in the grove behind, while a pair of baby cranes take tentative steps in the cool waters of the pond opposite, carefully watched over by their mother. The screens are 67-1/2 x 149 inches (172 x 378 cm) and in excellent condition. Chikubun was born March 19 of Meiji 11 in the flourishing art culture of the ancient capitol of Japan, Kyoto. He studied painting under the tutelage of two of Japans great artists Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902) and a founder of the University of Arts in Kyoto, Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871-1933). Later he opened his own atria near Manpukuji in Kyotos Shimogyo ward, and his bird and flower paintings were widely published (Chikubun Kacho Gafu, Shiki Rakuen etc.), along with an anthology of his work titled Chikubun Gashu.
