| Last in our series of pieces by Kato Shunto (b. 1916) is a lovely large Tsubo vase stamped on the base and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is covered in crackled pale glaze and decorated with blue bands and lappets fading into the cream colored surface; a lovely effect and a precursor to features of his recent Nitten submissions. The tsubo is quite heavy, with a sharp out-turned mouth contrasting and balancing the heavy ovoid form of the body. It is 9 inches (23 cm) tall and likely less than 10 years old. Shunto is a very highly esteemed Seto artist, some of his handicrafts held by Aichi prefecture as important cultural properties. Works by him are often praised at the prestigious Nitten exhibition, as well as the Brussels Grand-Prix, and his dishes grace the table of the Japanese Emperor as a favorite of the Royal Prince and Princess. | ||||||||||||
