| The keshiki on these five memezara plates by Nakamura Donen of the Yagoto Kiln is spectacular. Dark liquid glaze blankets the rich candy colored ame-yu, highlighting the folds in the clay left from forming on a piece of cloth. On one dish the thicker area of glaze is fractured, causing that area to shine as if glass shards were embedded in the clay. Each dish is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) diameter and all are in excellent condition. The first Donen (1876-1937) studied under important Kyoto artist Takahashi Dohachi, receiving the name Donen from A member of the Imperial family Arisugawa Narihito; concentrating heavily on Raku ware. The kiln moved to Nagoya during the Taisho period, receiving its name from Omote Senkei Iemoto SokuchuSai. The current Donen (V) was born the first son of Donen III. He worked with his father, and studied at the Nagoya Zokei School of Art before apprenticing under Nakazato Shigenori, third son of Living National Treasure Tarouemon XII (Mu-An), before returning to the family kiln in 1992, where he worked until taking over the name in 2001. Since he has expanded the kilns repertoire without tarnishing its reputation for extremely high quality tea ware befitting its prominent history. | |||||||||
