| A fantastic Meiji-Taisho Kamakura-Bori tray covered in red and black lacquer deeply carved with a Tai (sea bream), whose name has become synonymous with celebration. It is 14-1/2 by 11 inches (36.5 x 28 cm) and in fine condition. Very powerful imagery! Kamakura bori is called such as it was developed in the Kamakura area during the Muromachi period. A thin piece of wood is carved, then lacquered with red and black (and occasionally green or white) lacquer, generally polishing through the upper layers to reveal the color beneath in some areas, causing this effect of shadowing visible on this dish. It certainly gives the dish a sense of age and wear, which strikes a bone with the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi. | |||||||
