Modern Japanese Lacquer Vase by Enoki Sei
A square box wooden vase with free from raised decoration entirely covered in glossy black lacquer, a fine example of modern lacquer by Enoki Sei enclosed in the original wooden box. It is 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches tall (21 x 13 x 19.5 cm) and in excellent condition. Sei (b. 1917), of Japans famous lacquer center Wajima, is one of the most awarded of modern Japanese lacquer artists. He has been a consistent exhibitor with the Nitten since 1952, and been recipient of the Hokuto prize among many others. He is also honored as a judge for the Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (National Japanese New Crafts Exhibition), where he also received the governors prize. The 2001 Whos-Who of Japanese Art (Bijutsu Nenkan) ranks him 6th out of 120 lacquer artist listings in Japan.
