Edo p. Japanese Architectural Buddhist Temple Carving
An Edo period temple transom carving of roiling clouds carved from a single slab of Hinoki (cypress) darkened with a few centuries of age. Not too large, it is roughly 26 inches (66 cm) long, 8 inches (21 cm) deep and over 1 inch (3.5 cm) thick. This would be a brilliant shiki-ita for a tea room koro. This would have come from the very front of the temple, over the portcullis covering the stairs leading up into its gloomy incense blackened interior. (The Kozan Koro pictured is for scale and is not included).
